Doctorate level Programmes

There are two doctorate-level programmes at the Lyon CNSMD, a three-year Research and Practice Doctorate, offered in partnership with the 3LA Doctoral School, and a one-year "Artist Diploma" consisting of a personal, pre-approved artistic project.

RESEARCH AND PRACTICE DOCTORATE

The Research and Practice Doctorate of Music, offered in partnership with the 3LA Doctoral School is available in all specialisations taught at the Lyon CNSMD to students wishing to combine employment as a high level professional musician with research leading to a thesis which is nevertheless professionally oriented.

Admission

Admission to this programme is by audition. There are no age limits but candidates must satisfy the requirements for university registration this level and hold one of the following qualifications:

  • a master’s degree obtained in France or abroad;
  • other master’s level qualification obtained in France or abroad;
  • a DFS from the Paris CNSMD or a DNESM from the Lyon CNSMD

This applies to all specialisations taught at the Lyon CNSMD.
The preliminary selection is based on the candidate’s written application. Candidates who get through the preliminary round are invited to attend an audition and an interview held in French. The audition sessions are open to the public.
Final admission decisions are taken according to the criteria laid down by the 3LA Doctoral School.

Teaching programme

Over a three-year period the production of research is closely combined with professional artistic or cultural activities so that students can:

  • write a thesis in French (unless given special permission to use another language) on their research topic;
  • carry out and develop their artistic and/or cultural activities, which are enhanced by their research.

Students work under the supervision of two tutors:

  • a teacher at the Lyon CNSMD who is nominated by the Director of the Conservatory at the suggestion of the student;
  • a director of research, who is a member of the university, in accordance with the thesis charter of the University of Lyon.

After being admitted, and following a meeting at the Conservatory, the student receives a personal study programme covering the areas of both research and artistic or cultural activities which he or she undertakes to adhere to from the first year onwards, consisting of:

  • the calendar of working sessions and meetings with the director of research from the University;
  • the calendar of working sessions and meetings with the tutor from the Conservatory;
  • a provisional list of the working sessions in the relevant specialisation at the conservatory (from eight to twelve two-hour sessions over the first two years).

Duration

The programme normally takes three years to complete but permission to extend this period by one or more years can normally be obtained by requesting an extension to the time allowed to complete the thesis in accordance with university regulations.

Diploma

The Research and Practice Doctorate of Music is awarded by the University to students when they have:

  • fulfilled the requirement of the teaching programme,
  • written and submitted a thesis in French (unless special permission to use another language has been obtained) which may be accompanied by other documents or material,
  • successfully presented an artistic performance in relation with the research topic,
  • successfully defended their thesis.

ARTIST DIPLOMA

This doctorate-level programme offered by the Lyon CNSMD is open to musicians wishing to combine a high level and develop musical activity with the realisation of a personal project in the area of performance, creation or artistic production. The whole programme is very much professionally oriented.

Admission

Admission to this programme is by audition. Candidates must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • a master’s degree in France or abroad;
  • other master’s level qualification obtained in France or abroad;
  • a DFS from the Paris CNSMD or a DNESM from the Lyon CNSMD

Candidates must be under 30 at the time of the audition and can apply twice.
The preliminary selection is based on the candidate’s written application. Candidates who get through the preliminary round are invited to attend an audition and an interview with the examining panel. Final admission decisions are then announced. The audition sessions are open to the public.

 Teaching programme

The student or group of students is supervised by a teacher of a main subject, who is nominated as the tutor by the Director of the Lyon CNSMD at the suggestion of the student or group of students, and the Head of the Department concerned.

After being admitted, the student receives a personal project programme. This is defined with the student or group of students by the Director of the CNSMD, the director of Music Studies, the tutor and the student administration staff.

Progress is monitored at the end of each semester and the outcome can lead to the interruption of the project.

Duration

The programme normally takes two semesters, but this period can usually be extended by one or two semesters if the project requires more time to be completed and on condition that the programme of the initial project is adhered to.

Diploma

A doctorate-level Artist Diploma is awarded by the Lyon CNSMD to the student after validation of the realisation of the project and on condition that the obligations defined in the project programme have been fulfilled.
This diploma will be accompanied by a document describing the process of realisation of the project and by media documents confirming this.
