Master’s level Music Courses

‘GRADE DE MASTER’ DIPLOMA (OFICALLY RECOGNISED AS BEING EQUIVALENT TO A UNIVERSITY MASTER’S DEGREE)

ADMISSION

Students proceeding from undergraduate courses at the Lyon CNSMD

Students who hold a DNSPM awarded by the Lyon CNSMD can be admitted to master’s courses, providing that their master’s project has been validated by the teaching staff of the Lyon CNSMD. If this is not the case they are nevertheless allowed to apply to take the entry audition with external candidates. Candidates must be aged from 16 to 29.

External candidates

Students can apply for master’s courses at the Lyon CNSMD if they hold a DNSPM or  a bachelor’s degree (or a qualification from an institution in France or abroad which is recognised as being equivalent to a bachelor’s degree) in the specialisation concerned. Preliminary selection is based on the candidate’s written application.

Click here for more information about admissions.

COURSES

Teaching is organised in three units:

  • Unit 1. Main subject: specialisation that the student auditioned for: instrument, singing, writing, choral conducting, composition, chamber music and musical culture). Click here to see the list.

  • Unit 2. Subsidiary subjects connected with the main subject (chamber music and orchestra) and one non-specialised subject, which is nevertheless connected with the master’s research project. Click here to see the list.

  • Unit 3. Other skills: language, applied research methodology, master’s dissertation skills, etc.

DURATION

Master’s studies take two years (no reduction in the length of the course is possible). The two-year course leads to a ‘grade de master’ diploma (officially recognised as being equivalent to a university master’s degree).

DIPLOMA

By virtue of the decree published by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research on 16th July 2010, the ‘grade de Master’ is conferred automatically on holders of master’s diplomas in music performance, choral conducting, musical culture, composition and writing awarded by the Lyon CNSMD.
